What is Advocacy

If you are reading this from the United States and reside here, you have the power to contribute to this global mission simply by raising your voice. This is true in many other countries as well, but local avenues and effective strategies for raising one’s voice may vary in some of those other settings. Here in the United States, where Crown A Life is based, we are privileged to live in a country where we have access to those who represent us in government; policy makers, per job description, are obliged to listen to their constituents. We have the opportunity to leverage our voices and the considerable resources of government and policymakers on behalf of those who have less access to such power and resources due to poverty or other factors that also make them vulnerable to human trafficking. In other words, we can strategically amplify their voices and contend for their flourishing.

Briefly, advocacy refers to the act of publicly supporting or recommending a particular cause, policy, or idea. It involves actively promoting or defending a cause, often with the aim of influencing public opinion or government policy. Advocacy can take various forms, such as lobbying, campaigning, organizing protests, or raising awareness through education and outreach efforts. The goal of advocacy is typically to address a specific issue or injustice and to bring about positive change.

How can I be involved as a citizen in the fight against trafficking through advocacy?

Education and Awareness

You can spread awareness about the realities of human trafficking through social and print media, community events, and conversations with friends and family. Educate yourself about the signs of trafficking and how to report suspicious activities.

Support Legislation

Advocate for laws and policies against human trafficking locally, nationally, and internationally. This includes writing to lawmakers, signing petitions, and meeting with legislators or their staff (lobbying). These actions are often part of coordinated campaigns by anti-trafficking organizations, which offer training beforehand.

Support Anti-Trafficking Organizations:

Volunteer your time or donate funds to organizations that provide direct assistance to trafficking survivors, raise awareness, and advocate for policy change.

Engage with Businesses:

Encourage businesses to adopt ethical labor practices and supply chain transparency to ensure that their operations do not contribute to trafficking and exploitation, whether through the import of foreign goods or domestic production.

Community Engagement:

Work within your community to establish support networks for trafficking survivors, provide resources for at-risk populations, and collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to identify and respond to trafficking cases effectively.

Advocate for Victim Support Services:

Learn about and support increased funding and resources for victim support services such as shelters, counseling, legal aid, and healthcare. Engage with local organizations, subscribe to newsletters, or volunteer to understand their needs and challenges firsthand.

Community Engagement:

Join or organize public awareness campaigns to raise awareness about human trafficking and promote action to combat it. Your advocacy efforts can help raise awareness, promote prevention strategies, and support policies that combat trafficking and aid survivors.
